Tonight is the third game of Washington’s four-game road trip, and we’ve got some statistical housekeeping to pass along from each of the first two games of the trip.
First, from Sunday’s win over the Blackhawks, Tom Poti was erroneously given a minus-1 on a second-period goal by Chicago’s John Madden. That has been fixed, and Shaone Morrisonn has been given the minus-1.
In Washington’s Tuesday win over the Florida Panthers, Brendan Morrison’s second-period goal was originally listed as unassisted. Later, during the game, an announcement was made to inform us that Morrisonn and John Carlson were both being credited with assists on the play.
That was interesting because neither defenseman was even listed as having been on the ice at the time of the tally. That has also been fixed; Mike Green and Jeff Schultz were originally (and erroneously) given a plus-1 on the B. Morrison strike.
Now, Morrisonn and Carlson have been properly given the plus-1 on the goal. That gives Carlson a plus-11 in just 14 games, tying him for second place in plus/minus among all NHL rookies. Colorado’s T.J. Galiardi leads at plus-12.
Like we said a few posts ago when discussing the NHL’s off-ice officials, it’s a tough, tough gig to track all that goes on in the world’s fastest sport. Mistakes are inevitably made, but it’s good when they’re corrected.
That said, they still missed an assist in the Florida game, IMO. I thought Jason Chimera should’ve gotten the second helper on Eric Fehr’s goal and Chimera agreed when I asked him about it. The league however, did not.

/ March 19, 2010Thanks for the info, it is good to hear that the league goes back and changes stats when they find errors. I’ve always wondered how the statistic team during the game operates, how many of them monitor the game, if they use replays or if Toronto gets involved, and if they have any computerized tools to help them track the game. I’m always amazed at the stats kept, like Time-On-Ice. How do they DO that? Perhaps this would be a good article for later?

/ March 19, 2010How about a little love for the Carlson kid’s +/- per 60 minutes. I know +/- isn’t the newest, sexiest stat, but for a defenseman and one with limited pro time it’s one of the few thing we have to go on.
He’s tied for 4th in the league in +/- per 60 with a 2.65 (minimum 10 games).

He’s sitting behind only Ovechkin, Daniel Sedin, and a Pen’s rookie. That’s gotta say something for making the most of your time.

/ March 23, 2010“Oveckin?” Never heard of him. Probably won’t win a Cup. Your IP address identifies you as being from Slippery Rock University. Thanks for the heads up. Won’t be sending my kids there.
